Dallas County reported more than 1,000 new cases and 16 more deaths Thursday, bringing the total coronavirus death toll to more than 500, The Dallas Morning News reports.

As the pandemic persists, Dallas County delays “on-campus, face-to-face instruction” at public and private schools through Labor Day. Read more at The Texas Tribune.

As younger patients drive up the number of COVID-19 cases, the virus continues to spread in nursing homes, which threatens a population most at risk for serious illness and death. Since Friday, the state has reported more than 1,800 new cases among elderly, frail residents in nursing homes. NBC5 has more.

Meantime, Texas Gov. Greg Abbott says there are no plans for another statewide shutdown. Instead, he encourages widespread use of face masks for the next four weeks to “get COVID-19 under control,” Fox4 reports.
