God Shammgod joined the Dallas Mavericks as a special assistant before last season, after working as a coach at his alma mater, Providence, and about a decade playing ball overseas. He’s been a coach long before that, though, helping Kobe Bryant with his handle back when they were both in high school. And his legendary move — a  crossover called The Shammgod that makes opponents look like they’re jumping out of a moving car — has been adopted by every ballhandler in the NBA, as you can see in this video. It’s 11 minutes and worth your time.

Shammgod worked with new Mavericks point guard Dennis Smith Jr. when the rookie was chosen to appear at Under Armour’s Elite 24 game, a top high school all-star game.

“It’s crazy how it works out,” Smith told me a few weeks ago, “because at that time, my sophomore year, I was getting buzz, but he was the guy that was really like, ‘Yo, this is the best point guard in high school, regardless of class.’ So for me to even end up on the same team as him, that’s amazing.”
