Dallas ISD Weighs Conditional 13-Cent Take Hike. Superintendent Michael Hinjosa’s proposal calls for voters to approve three separate tax increases that would be dialed back if the school district doesn’t meet certain benchmarks within six years. Trustees yesterday discussed whether those performance expectations — including hitting a kindergarten readiness level of 72 percent for its early childhood initiative and cutting the number of state-designated “Improvement Required” campuses from 21 in 2016 to 10 in 2022 — are high enough. The DISD board would need to call an election by their meeting next week in order to get it on the Nov. 8 ballot.
DA Susan Hawk Back in the Office. Dallas County’s top lawyer made a surprise return to work yesterday, a place she hasn’t been since May. It’s still unclear whether she’ll be paid for the time she’s been away seeking treatment for depression at an Arizona clinic. She’s only worked 66 days so far this year.
Grand Jury Investigating Price-Caraway Fight. Dallas County jurors have called George Nash, a former staffer on Dwaine Caraway’s failed bid to oust County Commissioner John Wiley Price in spring’s Democratic primary, to testify next week about his claims that Price choked him during the fight that broke out between the rival candidates at a Dallas radio station-hosted debate.
Police Chase Ends When Thief Runs Out of Gas. After stealing merchandise from a Target in Mesquite, a man fled in a truck with one passenger and led Dallas County sheriff’s deputies and Mesquite cops through Northeast Dallas before his truck came to a halt for want of fuel.
“Cold” Front Coming. After a week of triple-digit highs, it’ll be slightly cooler (high temperatures closer to a mere 90 degrees ) over the weekend and into early next week, along with a chance of rain.
