Review: Mecca Restaurant

Head to this Dallas institution for giant house-made cinnamon rolls, endless cups of coffee, and top-notch people watching.

This bustling restaurant has been serving breakfast and lunch since 1938. We prefer to go for breakfast and people-watch over endless cups of coffee. If you’ve got a warrant out for your arrest, you might eat elsewhere; Mecca is a favorite spot for Dallas’ finest.

The giant house-made cinnamon rolls, a meal in themselves, sell out fast. Besides the usual eggs-protein-starch combination breakfast plates, Mecca offers decent versions of migas and eggs rancheros. Hung over? You can get a huge plate of chicken-fried steak with two eggs, hash browns, biscuits, and cream gravy. But be careful: recently our chicken-fried steak was served lukewarm, the breading had separated from the tenderized beef, and there was a sweet, syrupy taste to the dish. One of us loved the side of broccoli rice casserole; the other thought it tasted canned. Service is over-the-top friendly. Be prepared to be called any combination of  “honey,” “baby,” and “sweetie.” Ask for our favorite waitress, Sheeri. She’ll brighten your day. Breakfast and lunch only.
