Last week we tasted a variety of North Texas BBQ sauces. This Thursday, to spice things up (literally), the same tasters tried five different spicy BBQ sauces from North Texas. The sauces pack in the heat in a variety of ways: crushed red pepper, chipotle, habanero, and serrano peppers.

So which is the best according to D Magazine staff? Is it the same as your favorite?

The BBQ sauce:

A. Bentley’s Batch 5 Hot
B. Suckle Busters Hot & Spicy BBQ Sauce
C. Tony’s Hot BBQ Sauce
D. Brother’s Chipotle Gold
E. Bronco Bob’s Smoked Bacon Chipotle Sauce

Tasting notes:

Bentley’s Batch 5 Hot

  • To be honest, this tastes like standard BBQ sauce.
  • Not too spicy, good balance.
  • This doesn’t taste like BBQ sauce at all. Almost too much of a bitter taste.
  • Watery. Strong vinegar flavor, not spicy.
  • Some spice, not much flavor.

Suckle Busters Hot & Spicy BBQ Sauce

  • Tastes cheap and sweet.
  • Super vinegary.
  • Not much flavor, no heat.
  • OK, but not very spicy.
  • Thin but memorable.

Tony’s Hot BBQ Sauce

  • Lots of red chili pepper flavor. And heat.
  • Not a fan, can’t put my finger on it.
  • A little heat, more like a hot sauce.
  • Looks red in color, definitely spicy.
  • Almost tastes like candy.

Brother’s Chipotle Gold

  • Too tangy.
  • Way too spicy! Ouch.
  • Good BBQ taste, nice heat.
  • Thick, pretty bland.
  • Too spicy for my sensitive buds.

Bronco Bob’s Smoked Bacon Chipotle Sauce

  • Is this hoisin sauce?
  • Has an Asian flair. Not bad, but unexpected.
  • Sweet taste, very good! But no heat.
  • The thickest, moves like molasses. Unappealing flavor.
  • The most classic BBQ flavor of the bunch.

Tally up:

Bentley’s Batch 5 Hot 1
Suckle Busters Hot & Spicy BBQ Sauce 1
Tony’s Hot BBQ Sauce 1
Brother’s Chipotle Gold 1
Bronco Bob’s Smoked Bacon Chipotle Sauce 1

The winner is:

It’s a tie between, well, all of them. Somebody ran off with one of the bottles before we could do a tiebreaker. Guess you’ll just have to try them all. So, who makes your favorite spicy BBQ sauce? Let’s discuss.
