Mary Cates has moved her namesake antique store from Lover’s Lane to Inwood Village—and what a fresh look. I always liked Mary’s collections but the old space was frankly dark and rather dreary in that old antique store kind of way. The new space is bathed in light and really shows off furniture and accessories from France, England, Belgium and Sweden in well edited room settings. I’m especially empressed with the Swedish Gustavian look of many of the pieces, I think Dallas has been lacking in that very important recent antique movement. Mary is particularly passionate about lamps—she scours the world for interesting pieces to make into lamps with custom shades and bases. (Word is if you stand still long enough she may just convert you to UL rated.) But, I was taken with these headboards made from reclaimed elm from the West Coast. Headboards are difficult because they can overwhelm the room, but you sort of need one to frame the bed. The crown topped Amelie is perfect for today’s natural, organic look and is available For $1500 in king size.
