This duo from Austin brings a mix of everything eclectic into one cohesive brand of new-age cool. Their fusion of electro-pop, rock, and dance is a sound all its own, and their onstage theatrics really make them memorable. Lead singer and guitarist Aaron Behrens sounds like Jack White, moves like Freddie Mercury, and has styles like Snoop Dogg. When was the last time you saw a guy sport braided pigtails? Meanwhile, drummer and synthesizer extraordinaire Thomas Turner controls the ambiance and tempo in his Phantom of the Opera-inspired silver cape like some kind of a vampire DJ. Songs like “Sad Sad City” and “Piano Man” are already hugely popular with their ever-growing fan base.
Ghostland Observatory is playing at The Palladium Ballroom on Saturday, October 27 th at 9 p.m. Their shows around Halloween time are becoming a favorite tradition around here. And if their previous shows at Palladium were any indication, we’re expecting a stellar light show and a whole lot of dancing. We got a chance to speak with Turner and pick his brain on all things random.
FrontRow: What time do you usually go to sleep?
Thomas Turner: I go to sleep between 5:55 a.m. and 6:20 a.m. I really don’t like going to sleep much later than that.
FR: What do you hate most about performing?
TT: Wow, I don’t know about hating any of it. I guess insufficient bass volume on stage is a bummer.
FR: Who would you want to tour with most, who you’ve never toured with before?
TT: Daft Punk.
FR: What instrument do you wish you played?
TT: I wish I was really good at bass guitar.
FR: If you weren’t playing music and had the talent and circumstances to do anything else, what would it be?
TT: I’d like to be a relief pitcher.
FR: If you could choose anyone to be leader of the free world, who would it be?
TT: My son. He is very persuasive and he has some radical ideas for a 7 year old. I think it could be pretty interesting with him behind the wheel.
FR: If global warming melted the ice caps covering 90 percent of the known world with water, what city would you hope was spared so you could live there?
TT: I hope it would spare the whole state of Texas. Would that be ok?
FR: What is the best thing (food/substance/drink/thing) you ever put in your body?
TT: Geno’s cheesesteaks in Philly. Extra wiz with.
FR: If immortality was achievable by downloading your consciousness into a database and spending eternity in a virtual reality, would you do it?
TT: Nope. I think I’d rather dip out when my times up.
