STREET TALK

|

We’re already keeping score. At the April 6 Dallas City Council meeting, two new council members showed up to take notes on what to expect when they take office in May. Mayor-elect Starke Taylor sat quietly in the audience watching closely, while Jim Richards, the soon-to-be representative for Place 3, followed the arguments of departing council members.

While most Dallas hotels are preparing for the upcoming Republican National Convention, one hotel would just as soon do without the convention-crowd hubbub – at least most of it. The Mansion on Turtle Creek currently is not reserving rooms for conventioneers, says general manager Alexander de Toth. The Mansion’s management is hoping, however, that one particular guest will grace its halls: President Reagan. De Toth admits that there has been no formal request for reservations from the president or his staff, but he says that representatives of the Republican National Committee recently came to Dallas to inspect hotels and left the Mansion quite impressed.

Some Dallasites are making certain that departing Dallas City Councilman Rolan Tucker isn’t bored once he leaves office. Last fall, Tucker was asked for his support in forming the Greater Dallas Republican Forum. He now serves as chairman of the forum, which meets about once a month to hear state and national speakers such as Sen. John Tower. Other forum members include Republicans Ray and Kay Hutchison, Leonard and Natalie Kern, Dick and Kay Smith, Philip Montgomery, Terry Griffin, Tory Agnich and Cindy Brinker.
