After directing the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, Dr. Judith Salerno took the helm of Susan G. Komen in 2013. As president and CEO, she oversees revenue and mission programs, as well as the largest breast-cancer research program of any nonprofit.
What do you enjoy most about what you do? On the wall outside my office are the words, “Someone lived because of the work we do.” That says it all.
What’s the toughest challenge you’ve had to overcome? Knowing that our work is far from done. Every 13 minutes a woman or man in the U.S. still dies from metastatic breast cancer. We can’t stop now.
What’s your proudest moment? Giving a major speech with my three children in the audience, and knowing that I am working toward a future without breast cancer for their generation.
What’s the best business advice you can offer? Always have an open door, and share your passion for your organization’s mission with your employees.
What has you most excited about the future? I am very optimistic that we are on the verge of great advances in treating and preventing cancer.
What would people be surprised to learn about you (fun fact)? I have traveled with my family to all seven continents. And I really was at Woodstock!
