Why Are There Painted Halloween Traffic Barrels Along LBJ Freeway?

Really, why?

Why am I obliging the nice fellow who sent me a press release this morning about traffic barrels painted with Halloween-themed art as a promotion for the LBJ Express project and Valley View Center and the redevelopment going on up there to re-dub the area Dallas Midtown?

Because I couldn’t help but wonder about the wisdom of encouraging drivers to take a gander at traffic barrels as they drive by, even if it’s just along the frontage road. The release:

Although traffic congestion can be a nightmare on its own, the LBJ Express Project and Valley View Center at Dallas Midtown recently teamed up to provide some local artists with unusual canvasses just in time for Halloween.

Construction barrels provided by the LBJ Express Project have been transformed from blocky, orange figures into Halloween, eye-catching treats. The art project is a collaboration of the LBJ Express Project and Valley View Center at Dallas Midtown which houses the Gallery at Midtown and Artist Community to promote the local artists and 34 galleries at the center.

“Valley View Center at Dallas Midtown has the most amazing artist community and galleries and it is a pleasure to share their great talents with the folks of Dallas with some Halloween fun by painting what is usually a unproductive surface” said Jan True, Vice President of Beck Ventures; owners of Valley View Center at Dallas Midtown. “We hope everyone enjoys the “BOOtiful art!”

The barrel creations were created before a non-zombie audience at one of the mall’s recent Art Walks, a gallery showcase, held every third Saturday of the month. To see the creations and learn more about the artists, visit the LBJ Express Project’s Facebook and Twitter pages over the next few days, or take a drive on the frontage road at LBJ and Welch Road to see a selection through October 31.
