Oral Fixation is now in its 4th season and it’s kept things interesting with venue changes and fluctuating ticket prices, in some cases that seem to be made on the fly. Although the same show played on Monday at the Wyly, tonight’s group of storytellers will hold court at a much different venue, the Texas Theatre in Oak Cliff. This collection of speakers includes Nayrok Udab, who is the sibling of a famous local singer, but I’ll let you look that up. The lady deserves to stand on her own. Tonight’s theme is “Go With the Flow” and that begins at 8 pm this evening.
I had a chance to attend the Dallas VideoFest screenings at the South Dallas Cultural Center last night, which I endorsed in this very space yesterday. I am glad I did, as the event turned out to be even more illuminating than I was expecting. The documentaries Out of Deepwood and The New South Dallas in particular gave invaluable perspective on the events, old and new, that have greatly impacted the city, south of downtown. Tonight at the same venue, the festival continues with 1979’s Killer of Sheep. Filmmaker Charles Burnett will be in attendance and will participate in a Q&A following the film, which has received considerable posthumous praise since its initial limited release. That’s largely in part to some help from Steven Soderbergh, which is surely a huge boost.
We’re building up to the State Fair’s last weekend, so today might be the last day to go before it really gets crazy. Of course, that might be your thing; I prefer a crowded fair.
