As Mr. Pearson mentioned in Leading Off, more than a few of us from the magazine attended a certain rock and roll performance at Club Dada last night. It’s either that my colleagues and I have similarly excellent taste in music, or that we’re just avid observers of the news and hype cycle as it pertains to new bands. Or maybe it was the local connection, but it’s probably all of the above.
It was also noted that we’re maybe a step slower today; if you were foolish enough to end your evening with cinnamon toast at BuzzBrews at approximately 3 am, then you’d be a little sluggish, too. It’s nice to know that pop rock can still make people do fun and stupid things.
Speaking of pop rock, Jersey Boys is back again, having played in the area multiple times since 2008. The production just opened at Bass Hall yesterday and tells the tumultuous story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons as they rose to international notoriety. It has been extremely well-received in each of its runs, and I’ve yet to hear a mixed review. This is the perfect excuse to bring up one of my favorite obscure showbiz facts, since I do know one Four Seasons-related product that yielded a mixed review. That would be the group’s somewhat puzzling decision to tackle Bob Dylan’s music at the height of his fame. Personally, I think they did a great job.
Now that our trusted theater critic Lindsey Wilson has weighed in on Barbecue Apocalypse, one of the plays that recently debuted at Kitchen Dog Theater’s New Works Festival, I can confidently suggest that you should see it. Wilson gave the zombie comedy an “A,” and it’s been a minute since I’ve seen her rank a production that highly. Consider dinner at Dream Cafe before attending.
