“The world has moved on. We should, too.” So says Steve Blow in his well-written column today. I suggest you read the whole thing, but here’s a taste:
In Kennedy’s limousine, nearing the end of the downtown route, Nellie Connally turned and said the last words ever spoken to him: “Mr. President, you certainly can’t say that Dallas doesn’t love you.”
The words still pierce our heart. All the day’s warmth and welcome vanished in the few seconds it took for a bitter, disturbed man to fire his $19.95 rifle three times.
By now it should be clear to all that the political fringe in Dallas had no influence on Lee Oswald. The Marxist wannabe was too wrapped up in the drama in his own head to pay attention to others.
His type was little known in 1963 — the pipsqueak wanting to make his mark with a gun. And that’s part of what created the blowback on Dallas and the countless conspiracy theories. Oswald’s scrawny shoulders simply weren’t broad enough for all the blame we needed to purge.
