The Morning News reports that the wife and son of Dallas ISD superintendent Mike Miles are moving back to Colorado Springs:
Miles informed his top staff and trustees last night that his wife, Karen, and youngest child, Anthony, will return to Colorado in time for his son to start seventh grade there. Miles’ family moved with him a year ago, leaving where they had lived for 17 years, to settle down in Dallas and send Anthony to their neighborhood middle school.
“It’s a difficult decision, but we feel that our first responsibility is to our son, and we have to do what is best for him,” Miles said in an email notifying district leaders. “We also hope to insulate him from the negative media that is starting to take its toll on him and Karen.” …
Miles has said he plans to eventually retire in Dallas, proudly announcing last fall he got a Texas drivers license. But his family’s departure raises concerns about his commitment here. In his email, he said he remains “absolutely steadfast” in serving Dallas ISD.
Over on the DMN editorial blog, Nicole Stockdale argues that you can’t blame the Miles family for wanting to get out of town:
Miles is fighting through one of the most difficult jobs in Dallas, a city full of difficult jobs. He has a family who is obviously unhappy — either with the negative press or how they’re fitting in or some other unknown reason. Probably a combination of all of the above. There were protests at Miles’ house, scheduled for the same time as his son’s birthday party, so no one can make the argument that the job isn’t hitting the family, quite literally at home.
