Thumbs Up to members of the Richardson Independent School District board and members of the board’s merit pay panel for accepting a proposal to begin a teacher merit pay plan beginning in the fall. Under an initial plan, merit pay would be given to teachers on the basis of outstanding performances by the teachers or their students. The panel’s report, commissioned by the board last August, proposed merit pay and staff evaluation procedures with annual teacher evaluations. Some area school districts have decided to wait for state action, while others have rejected merit pay proposals. In accepting the proposal, the board is setting a needed precedent for other districts.
