THE HIGH COST OF EASY TICKETS

|

No doubt about it. One of life’s biggest downers is standing in the rain for six hours waiting to buy a ticket to see The Boss and reaching the window to discover that VISA doesn’t count, or that the only seats left are up in Nosebleed City, behind the stage.

The good news: There’s a way to avoid those long lines. The bad news: It’ll cost you a wad to purchase your concert or sporting events tickets from ticket agencies that are, in effect, organized legal scalpers. We shopped five of the bigger agencies in Dallas and discovered that even a lousy seat often costs twice the face value of a non-scalped ticket. As for the sporting events, the sky’s the limit. To compare the five larger agencies, we contacted each agency a week before the recent Corey Hart concert at Reunion Arena and priced tickets. When purchased from the issuing agency, Rainbow-Ticketmaster, the cost of any ticket in the house is $17. Three days before the Cowboys-Bears game, we priced a goal-line and a 50-yard-line seat with the five agencies. A regular Cowboys ticket costs $19 these days. Our dismal results are shown in the chart above. Buy early or pay the price.
