FB Field Trip: True Widow at The Lounge on Elm St.

|

I don’t go out as much as I used to, or as much as I probably want to. Last night, however, I managed to drag myself away from my wife and kid and TiVo to go to Deep Ellum to see True Widow. Glad I did.

I’ve been listening to their songs online for awhile now, but that doesn’t remotely do them justice. True Widow — the latest outfit from Dan Phillips (ex of Slowride) — is one of those bands that needs to be experienced live to be truly appreciated. I mean, that’s probably true for most groups, but there’s something about the three-piece’s hazy, rumbling echo that is better served in a setting where the sound can bounce off the walls and build on itself. (I had my phone set on “vibrate” and it felt like it was ringing through the entire set.) I guess they could best be described as being from the “shoegaze” school of music, but that’s probably too pat an answer. Enough of my babbling; I think the folks over at We Shot JR have something on them planned this week. Until then, hit the first link and re-live the early ’90s — in a good way. They play again on March 7 at Club Dada.
