Dr. Werner Baumgartner, a California biophysical chemist, has developed a technique for analyzing hair strands for traces of drugs, The test will be commercially available by the end of the summer. So if you’ve wondered about the rights and wrongs of the urine check, here’s another hairy problem.
Hair analysis can determine not only the drug taken but the amount used. And abstaining from drugs for a few days, or even a few months, won’t guarantee a clean bill of health. Drugs leave a durable record in hair strands that, when the hair is long enough, can reveal drug usage from years back. So, if you’re still sporting a hip-length style from your wilder days, it might be time to pay a visit to the hairdresser.
