SLUSH FUN

|

This summer, lovers of grown-up slurpees are faring quite well-tequila drinkers are still heading out to Margaritaville and champagne peach lovers are still singing the bellini blues. But these are not the only games in town:

At Gator’s in the West End, start out with the Lethal Weapon (they sell about 1, 200 per weekend), a deadly concoction of 190-proof vodka and citrus juices, but don’t stop there. We went back for seconds of the Ultimate Colada; the Peach Crush, made with peach schnapps, fresh pureed peaches, amaretto, vodka, and almond liqueur; and the Top Gun, with its combination of 190 vodka, rum, raspberry liqueur, fresh coconut, strawberries, and fruit juices.

Over on Greenville Avenue, Fat Tuesday’s frozen drink selections include the Crawgator (their specialty) with its mean mix of three kinds of rum, brandy, and fruit juices; and the Triple By Pass, a cherry-flavored cold one made with vodka and 190-proof pure grain alcohol. Leave the 190 Octane (vodka, 190-proof alcohol, and a dab of orange juice) for last so that the bill appears a blur.

Our list wouldn’t be complete without a tip of the hat to Highland Park Yacht Club and its Windsurfer, a frozen drink masterpiece. This not-too-sweet Kir Royale is made with champagne, Cassis (black currant liqueur), and fresh raspberries.
