DALLAS City of Winners

|

For many years, in spite of its tremendous contributions to medical and scientific progress on several fronts, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center was one of the best kept secrets in Dallas. Heavy traffic in both directions on Harry Hines Boulevard breezed by day after day hardly noticing the Center’s beautiful campus and complex of modem buildings.

Then in December 1985, something happened that made Dallas and the world sit up and take notice. Two members of the faculty won one of the world’s most coveted awards for human achievement, the Nobel Prize for Medicine. Drs. Michael S. Brown and Joseph L. Goldstein were honored for their discoveries in cholesterol metabolism, a breakthrough so significant that they appear to be taking a giant step forward toward victory over heart disease.

Brown and Goldstein are among eight faculty who have been named to the National Academy of Sciences within the past eight years, and two other faculty are members of the British equivalent, the Royal Society. Thirteen of the Center’s faculty have been listed among the world’s one hundred “most cited” scientists, an accomplishment ranking Southwestern with the top few medical schools in the nation.

The UT Southwestern Medical Center, which comprises the Southwestern Medical School, Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Science and the Southwestern Allied Health Sciences School, also has been recognized for research in the nutrition, genetics and cancer fields.

Current efforts are under way to raise the funds needed to build a teaching hospital as the newest addition to the Center’s superb facilities.
