The tiny town of Hatch, New Mexico lives for one season of the year: pepper season. Every year, the population of the little agricultural village by the Rio Grande swells to several times its normal number of people as chile fans from all over the country pour in to appreciate the famous peppers, typically harvested in late August. Tuesday, a breach in an arroyo caused massive flooding in Hatch and hundreds of people have had to abandon their homes to stay in a temporary evacuation center until the waters subside. Luckily, Central Market got their chilies before the flood and the store’s Hatch Chile Festival starts tomorrow and runs through the 27th. Central Market announced today it will donate $7,000 to Hatch Aid. Additionally, during its annual Hatch Chile Festival each store will collect donations from customers.
