What I’m Watching: Texas Rangers Playoff Baseball

Plus: the Cowboys try to redeem themselves against San Francisco, and the Horned Frogs hope to right the ship on the road.

Will Texas or Tampa slide into the ALDS? Tim Heitman-USA TODAY Sports

The Wings were swept by the defending-champion Aces, but the Cowboys cruised against the Patriots while the Rangers are in the postseason despite losing the regular-season finale (and three out of four) to Seattle.

Here’s what I’m watching this week:

Tuesday, 10/3 through Thursday 10/5—AL Wild-Card Round: Rangers versus RaysVarious Times and Networks

One more win would have secured both the division and a first-round bye, but Texas will settle for the wild card in its first playoff appearance since 2016. And they probably won’t complain too hard about a matchup against Tampa Bay, whose pitching staff is even more decimated than the Rangers’ and whose best player, shortstop Wander Franco, remains on administrative leave while under investigation for inappropriate conduct with a minor. Two wins in three games will move Texas onto the next round, which begins on Saturday. Jamey Newberg and I will have coverage after each game of this run, however long it lasts.

Saturday, 10/7—TCU at Iowa State7 p.m., FS2

No one expected the Horned Frogs to replicate last year’s run to the national title game, but no one probably expected them to be treading water after home losses to Colorado and West Virginia, either. Saturday should be a rebound game. It needs to be, too, for the Horned Frogs to stay in the thick of the Big XII race.

Sunday, 10/8—Cowboys at 49ers7:20 p.m., NBC

You remember what happened last playoffs. And the playoffs before that. So you can imagine how much Mike McCarthy and Co. have eyed this matchup, both as an opportunity for revenge as well as a chance to make a statement against one of their few peers at the top of the NFC hierarchy

What Should We Make of the Rangers’ Accidental Youth Movement?

It's been 26 years since a defending World Series champion leaned on this many young players out of the gate. In Texas' case, that wasn't the plan. But that doesn't make an influx of former first-round picks a bad thing, either.
