Former Dallas mayor, as well as former Dallas Morning News/D Magazine/Dallas Observer reporter, Laura Miller stopped by the Old Monk yesterday to talk about why she now spends her days fighting for clean coal and against major new Preston Center development. Plus, in this week’s episode of Ear Burner, she tells the story behind her classic March 1991 D Magazine story on John Wiley Price.

A few notes before you listen:

1. In yesterday’s paper, Morning News columnist Steve Blow advised his readers to do whatever police officers ask them to do, galdurnit.

2. The cost of living in Sunnyvale, Texas, is 21 percent greater than the United States average.

3. Mark Cuban plays the president of the United States in Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!, which premiered Wednesday and will have an encore presentation at 6 p.m. Saturday:

4. I commissioned Laura Miller to write an essay about life in Preston Hollow for our neighborhood guides. It didn’t turn out to be a good fit for that project, but we ran her commentary here on FrontBurner instead.

5. Former local television reporter Sarah Dodd appeared on the cover of the January 2007 issue of D Magazine with her husband, former Dallas police chief David Kunkle.

6. Miller works for Summit Power’s Texas Clean Energy Project.

7. Zucchi’s restaurant in Odessa serves “classic Italian food in an elegant environment suited for kings.”

8. Miller’s March 1991 profile of Dallas County Commissioner John Wiley Price is one of the 40 greatest stories D Magazine has ever published.

9. In the October 2007 issue of D, Zac exonerated Miller of having cost Dallas the chance to be the home of the Dallas Cowboys new stadium (known now was Jerry World in Arlington). The real villain? Congressman Pete Sessions.

10. Miller announced her departure from journalism, and entrance into politics, with a Dec. 18, 1997, Dallas Observer column headlined “Mr. Mayor, Meet Your Nightmare.”
