Things To Do In Dallas Tonight: Aug. 21

I want to believe.
I want to believe.

As Glenn mentioned, my friend Bradford went to Ted Cruz’s “Defund Obamacare” rally last night. You can read all about where the wheels came off right over on D Healthcare Daily. Hint: it was somewhere around the beginning.

Tonight, the recently returned Upstart Productions has a performance of The Aliens at the Magnolia Lounge in Fair Park. The plot involves two disaffected 30-somethings sitting in a parking lot behind a Vermont coffee shop discussing Charles Bukowski, music, and mushrooms. Sounds either super boring or over-the-top pretentious, but somehow Annie Baker’s sweet Obie-winning play is neither. I saw the play recently when another new theater group, PlaySite, put on a minimal outdoor production. Tickets to this one are a very reasonable $15.

If you’re looking for a bit of pre-theater food and drinks, there’s the Meridian Room just down the road. Just as an aside, some friends and I got a reminder about the still lingering shadiness of that area Monday night as we were walking to our respective cars, so keep a watchful eye.

Meanwhile, the City Hall’s Living Plaza efforts continue with Shade, an installation of shady pavilions built by local businesses. There’s free kite rentals, tables and chairs, bottled water, and food trucks out and about for lunch. Look for Yellowbelly and Cool Haus this afternoon.
