Why Does the U.S. Have More People in Prison Than Any Other Nation in The World?

|

OK, so I’m not actually going to answer that question, because that’s got a lot more to do with the war on drugs than anything else.

I’m just going to point to today’s news that Kenneth Santodomingo of Dallas was sentenced to 30 months in prison for pointing a laser at a helicopter.

The helicopter was working about 4 a.m. when the pilot reported that someone on the ground had beamed a green laser at him at least four times, police said. The pilot directed officers on the ground to a home.

Santodomingo answered the officers’ knock at the door. He admitted having pointed the laser, saying he wanted to see how far it would go, federal agents said.

I realize this is a stupid, dangerous thing for the guy to have done, but is locking him away for 2.5 years the most useful punishment we can come up with in this case?
