Like many people, I grew listening to Kidd Kraddick in the Morning, a tradition that began mostly because KISS FM played the cool music my mom really didn’t want me to listen to. And while the banter occasionally drove me bonkers, it’s still a weird morning without his voice on the radio.

It’s opening night of WaterTower Theatre’s production of the campy musical Xanadu, and there are still seats available for purchase. It’s based on the deeply silly Olivia Newton-John movie, but succeeds in poking fun in a way that somehow improves upon the source material. The year is 1980, and the place is Venice Beach. Sonny is a frustrated artist who’s lacking inspiration. Kira is a beautiful muse who comes to Earth to help frustrated artists find inspiration. When Kira starts to fall for the mortal Sonny, her otherworldly sisters aren’t too happy. It’s pretty much like Romeo and Juliet, but with more roller skates and less tortured teenage death.

For dinner, check out our Addison listings here. You can’t go too far wrong with Dream Cafe, a place I also like for a pre-show snack near Theatre Three in the Quadrangle. If you just need a spot to pour one out for a guy who felt like a longtime friend, there’s Cool Out at the Crown and Harp. Or a ton of other bars ready to accommodate your Monday evening needs.
