What to Do in Dallas This Weekend: July 30-Aug. 1

|

Happy Friday. You’re in the home stretch!

If you’re among those with time and money to burn this afternoon, drive yourself to Gypsy Wagon and get first dibs on the items at its rummage sale. Perhaps you will find a new pair of cowgirl boots. If so, you really have no choice but to wear them out tonight, and your first stop should be the Feast of Saint Martha at The Grape. Do it. Your friends will be jealous.

Olympic gymnast Nastia Liukin has undergone the natural evolution from world-class athlete to … clothing designer? Yep, and Saturday, you can line up for an autograph at the launch of her new line, Supergirl, and watch an exhibition from members of the World Olympic Gymnastic Academy. Fashion and tumbling together? Sure! Makes sense to me!

If you get to Stonebriar Mall early enough in the day, you’ll still have time to make it to Vino 100’s Wine, Blues, and Barbecue party. Reservations are required, though, and the surest way to get a table is to Denise Jones at 214-969-9463.

Your last stop is the Tales From the Crypt opening reception at Photographs Do Not Bend Gallery. Call me morbid, but I can’t wait to see the crime scene images.

August begins Sunday, and I would completely understand if you were inclined to spend the day lazing by the pool. If you do, and you happen to live among the well-groomed denizens of the State Thomas neighborhood, have The Alcove deliver you something cold and refreshing. And please, please wear sunscreen. You don’t want to wind up looking like a talking wallet, now, do you? I’ve seen some of you in the wild, and I worry.

If you’d prefer to stay indoors, check out the final day of Katherine Strause’s exhibit at Mighty Fine Arts. And while you’re in the area, stuff your gullet with Hattie’s pecan-crusted catfish and grits. And now I will wipe the drool off my keyboard.

As you were.
