Concert Picks for Thursday, Oct. 23: “Lost Generation,” Tony Schwa at “Vibe,” Hodgy Beats, and More

The Crown and Harp producer-versus-producer beat battle is kind of like Rock 'Em Sock 'Em Robots with DJs. Or maybe Hungry Hungry Hippos with records.

“Fresh Beats” (The Crown and Harp—Downstairs): This producer-versus-producer beat battle is kind of like Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots with DJs. Or maybe Hungry Hungry Hippos with records, as opposed to marbles. Am I showing my age? Here is the lineup of turntable gladiators:

DJ Trek
TY Lavell
MIGI
Mic Most
Buffalo Black
VA Tha Gray
WTF
Devin Candy

I want to reiterate that of all the events I have been encouraged to attend at this space, this is the one to which I’ve been referred most enthusiastically. Last month’s winner, SikWitIt, will be putting on a performance as well.

“Vibe” (Beauty Bar): Colly T’s guest this evening is DJ Tony Schwa, who you may know from “Cool Out” on Mondays. Tonight he will foregoing the usual disco, funk, and soul, for “bass house and UK Garage.”

Hodgy Beats/Domo Genesis/Left Brain (Club Dada): Someone leaned over and whispered in my ear this week that these are the three Odd Future members that people are least likely to be excited about, and I have to disagree. While they may not have the blinding star power of Frank Ocean or Tyler, there are still plenty of OFWGTA fans who would line up for this, particularly for Hodgy Beats, who could headline a big show alone. I am starting to think this venue might be too small. We’ll see.

“Lost Generation” (The Crown and Harp—Upstairs): Though this venue has had some pretty extreme nights of record selecting, “The Lost Generation’s” Wanz Dover can often be heard playing some pretty challenging sounds himself. Tonight he’ll have along Andrew Haas of Denton’s “Discipline” collective to further the point. Both artists have tipped me off to some interesting sounds over the years, whether it was Haas in the case of Dogpop, or Dover, who sent me this excellent clip by Rrose recently. Either of those links is a good setup point for what you might hear tonight. B2B and Trophic, otherwise known as Matthew Parks, will also perform.

Screening: The Punk Syndrome (1919 Hemphill): This Finnish documentary is known as Kovasikajuttu in its country of origin, and it tackles the rather heavy subject of a punk group that includes members who all have learning disabilities.

Centro-matic/Daniel Rush Folmer (AT&T Performing Arts Center): Centro-matic will be performing as a duo, which is better suited to the skyscraper backdrop of these performances.

Denton singer/songwriter Daniel Folmer released a record over the summer called Malverde, which is an obvious reference to the unofficial patron saint of drug dealers, Jesus Malverde. Folmer has a self-described “folk ballad” on his new record called “SHT YR FKN MTH MY DARLING.” His caps, not mine. Sounds pretty sensitive and understanding to me. Bring the kids.
