Methinks the White House is working the perfect kitchen scam. First Lady Laura Bush fired the former chef ages ago and has been “auditioning” replacements whenever she needs a fancy pants dinner or tea for a queen. Mercury exec chef Chris Ward just returned from performance number three. “They’re not going to make their minds up until September,” he told me this weekend. In the meantime, the Bush administration is saving some big bucks. I’m not talking about the chef’s salary which is around $80,000 give or take ten grand. Dishwashers rule in the trickle down economics of the kitchen staff–they make over $20 an hour (plus overtime) and many of the full-time scrubbers take home over $90,000–more than the salaried exec chefs. My wish? Ward gets offered the job and turns them down. Sweet.
