LIFE AFTER BELO

|

What does this story about a Kofi Annan speech have to do with Belo’s layoffs last year?

Long-distance FrontBurnervian Tim O’Leary, formerly of the Morning News, wrote me a note last week in response to a post. When I asked what he was doing in Switzerland, here’s what he said:

I’m senior writer – of speeches, reports, opeds etc – for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS. It’s not a U.N. agency per se like UNICEF or the World Food Programme. Rather, it’s more like a Washington czardom, like the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative or the Office of Drug Control Policy. We coordinate the international response to the pandemic using all the resources of the U.N. system. I just wrote a speech for Kofi Annan about AIDS.

There’s the connection. Kudos to Tim O’Leary.
