ideas Romanian-born corvin matei wanted to help the homeless, so he did-with a pencil and his drafting table. After visiting the Austin Street Shelter with a group of honor students Matei wanted to help. So the 18-year-old Hillcrest High School graduate, who hopes to be an architect, called Jackson/ Wells Partners, Inc., the designers of the New Austin Street Shelter.

MIKE WELLS asked Matei to submit some of his own drawings of the building’s interior and exterior. “We were quite impressed with the quality of his work, ” Wells said. So impressed that the company paid him $200 for the drawings, two of which will be used in the final project.

Father JERRY HILL, director of the Austin Street Shelter, says many of the homeless mentally ill are frightened by the crowds in the current shelter. Things should be better in the new 30, 000-square-foot building, scheduled to be completed early in 1992. In the meantime, Jackson/Wells has hired Matei for the summer. He says he plans to enter UT-Arlington’s respected architecture program in the fall. Someday, he hopes to see his own building constructed- “Something that is very durable in time. “
