Two more UT Southwestern scientists have been elected to the National Academy of Sciences, one of the top honors for American researchers. Molecular genetics professor Dr. Russell DeBose-Boyd and physiology chair Dr. Duojia Pan have been recognized for their scientific discoveries. Debose-Boyd discovered the pathway for mechanisms that inform the prevention and treatment of heart disease. Pan found a signaling that plays a vital role in determining organ size and tissue regeneration. The two were among 120 new U.S. and 23 foreign members announced last month. UTSW now has 26 members of NAS, more than any institution in Texas.
The Dallas County Medical Society and DCMS Foundation will break ground on a new headquarters this week in Uptown. The location will include event and office space as well as a DCMS Foundation library of medicine featuring exhibits highlighting physicians and medicine’s role in Dallas County. Hands-on learning opportunities for children connected to the medical profession will also be part of the library.
UT Dallas and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas are partnering with the National Fitness Campaign to launch a Fitness Court Studio at University Recreation. The ribbon cutting took place last week, making the studio the first of its kind in the state. The court provides 2,000 square feet of space to host group yoga, pilates, or Zumba and individual workouts. The Fitness Court app allows users to access training and receive coaching in the space, which includes seven exercise stations. BCBSTX and the NFC are funding 20 more courts like this one. Resource Center, one of the nation’s largest service providers for the LGBTQIA+ community, will be breaking ground on an affordable senior housing development this week in Oak Lawn. Built in response to the growing demand for affordable housing in the area, it will be the first LGBTQIA+-affirming affordable housing development in North Texas. Oak Lawn Place will have 84 units.
