The baseball will be fun. The basketball? Stressful. Here’s what I’m watching this week:
Monday, 3/13—World Baseball Classic: United States versus Canada—9 p.m., FS1
Spring training has no shortage of charms, but the WBC’s return means that’s taking a temporary back seat to international baseball. while this is hardly the best game of the day, it is an opportunity to watch the U.S. squad roar toward what should be a resounding victory over its neighbors to the north, which is much harder to come by in other major sports like basketball, soccer, and especially hockey.
Monday, 3/13—Mavericks versus Grizzlies—6:30 p.m., Bally Sports Southwest
The hits keep coming for the Mavericks, who have sunk to .500 on the season after a fourth-quarter meltdown on Saturday against the Grizzlies in Memphis. With Dallas mired in a game-by-game battle for survival in the West, tonight’s contest isn’t any more or less important than the other remaining 13 in the regular season. But a hard-earned win without Luka Doncic or Kyrie Irving would at least send the message that Dallas might have the stomach for what it will take to get back to the playoffs.
Friday, 3/17—Men’s NCAA Tournament: No. 6 TCU versus Arizona State OR Nevada—9:05 p.m., TruTV
The Horned Frogs are dancing for the second year in a row and will be comfortably favored against whichever opponent they face. But No. 11 seeds have upset No. 6 seeds at least twice in six of the past seven men’s NCAA Tournaments. Will TCU avoid Cinderella’s spell and move on to the round of 32?
