Nine proposed cigarette warning labels are being scrapped by the FDA, according to Time.
The warnings, which depicted images such as diseased lungs and a man exhaling cigarette smoke through a tracheotomy hole in his throat, were to cover half of the package, front and back, and include the number 1-800-QUIT-NOW.
The percentage of Americans who smoke has declined from 40 percent in 1970 to 19 percent today. However, the decline has stalled since 2004. Critics have argued that the proposed warnings were anti-smoking advocacy and went beyond factual information.
