When you walk into the bright white and modern space adorned with JANUS et Cie’s signature green cone-shaped trees, it’s hard to remember that this used to be home to an antiques showroom. And that’s the point. JANUS fet Cie started out about 30 years ago as a general multiline showroom. When owner Janice Feldman noticed a trend toward outdoor living in Los Angeles and the lack of choice in seating beyond uncomfortable, heavy wrought iron, she decided to set her sights on that market. Since then, she’s been at the forefront in the use of new materials, including a proprietary high-density resin that is totally impervious to the elements. She was also one of the first furniture manufacturers involved in the green movement, developing Januswood more than 20 years ago using recycled milk cartons to simulate wood. Not all of JANUS et Cie’s products are meant for outdoor use, and the indoor items maintain the edginess and innovation of the stuff meant for the great outdoors. Bonus: if you do want to exchange your Januswood, you can always recycle it back to milk cartons. 1525 Hi Line Dr. 214-712-0003. www.janusetcie.com.
