Review: Javier’s Gourmet Mexicano

Just when we think it can’t possibly be that good, we pop in for a visit and fall in love with Javier’s all over again.

It’s amazing that one restaurant in a city of thousands can be so popular after nearly 30 years in business. But such is the case with Javier’s, the Mexico City-style restaurant on the cusp of Highland Park. Darn near everyone here is a regular, and those folks celebrate special occasions, too. Just when we think it can’t possibly be that good—have you seen the valet line?—we pop in for a visit and fall in love with Javi’s all over again.

Everything from that warm salsa—the oh-so-slightly sweet verde and subtly hot roja—to the heart-warming tortilla soup to the heart-stopping filete cantinflas, tenderloin of beef stuffed with Chihuahua cheese and butter (!), makes us as giddy as a schoolgirl. Sure, you can get a plate of smoked chicken nachos (and they’re delish), but you’ll be sorry if you don’t order the mesquite-smoked pollo ahumado, the most tender and juicy chicken that’ll ever touch your tongue, or barra de navidad, fat shrimp sautéed in an intriguing blend of coffee, orange juice, and tomato sauce. After one bite of light-as-air chocolate mousse, we’re whipped.
