Dallas responds to Hurricane Harvey.

Harvey Is Heaviest Tropical Downpour in U.S. History. The rain slowed down a bit yesterday, but the death toll from the disastrous storm is already at 18. 13,000 people have been rescued in Houston and surrounding areas so far. The feds have approved $25 million to fix Texas roads and bridges affected by the storm.

Dallas Shelters Ready for Evacuees. The numbers so far have been low due to Houston roads being shut down. But 250 buses are on standby there to bring people to the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center. So far, 227 people are staying at the convention center. There are volunteer doctors from Children’s Health, Parkland, and UT Southwestern at the ready. The city’s three recreation center shelters are also taking in evacuees. Dallas Mayor Rawlings said North Texas is poised to accommodate as many as 6,500 evacuees.

UNT Accepting Students Displaced by Harvey. The University of North Texas is immediately taking in displaced students and waiving application fees. “As we watch the news about Hurricane Harvey’s impact on Texas’ Gulf Coast, our thoughts are with the people affected. Our university is a community of great compassion, and I know that we will support the impacted individuals in every way we can,” UNT President Neal Smatresk said.

Dallas Athletes Respond to Harvey. Multiple North Texas athletes and teams have posted on social media about donating to those in need following Harvey. Jason Witten is auctioning his suite for tomorrow’s game, with all proceeds going to the Houston Area Women’s Center. Dez Bryant donated $50,000. The Rangers are contributing at least $1 million toward relief efforts.

Robert E. Lee Monument Could Come Down Next Week. Three of the four black City Council members called for the Oak Lawn Confederate statue’s immediate removal in a resolution, which the mayor has put on the Sept. 6 agenda.

Zeke Elliott’s Appeal Hearing Continues Today. The Cowboys running back’s appeal hearing to challenge his suspension began yesterday and is continuing today. Arbitrator Harold Henderson will make the final call.
