My colleague Krista Nightengale is exactly the kind of woman I hope my girlies grow up to be. She’s passionate, intelligent, warm, and committed to making our city (if not the world) a better place. Case in point? For the past year, she’s spearheaded Dallas’ Big Read, a program of the National Endowment for the Arts, designed to get Americans reading again.

All of Krista and her cohert’s (D Academy, D Magazine Partners, and the Friends of the Public Library) pays off with today’s launch of The Big Read. Per Krista, “More than 21,000 copies of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 were handed out to ninth- and tenth-grade Dallas ISD students with the hopes that the entire city will read and talk about the book during the month of April.” Krista and a crew of volunteers were up at 4:30 am (!) this morning handing out books at DART stations. And they want to give you a book, too.

Just tell us the book that made the biggest impact on you in the comments and you can win two special editions of Fahrenheit 451. The special edition includes a D logo and a note to readers on the first page.

The catch? You have to give one of the books away to someone you run into that day (not a relative or co-worker). I’ll choose 10 winners and announce them in a post next Monday, April 8. You can pick up your books at D Magazine‘s downtown office.

For more information about The Big Read, check out the website or download the app. Happy reading!
