When I Went: September 2012

Was That the Best Time of Year to Go? We went during the rainy season, which was great because crowds and prices were low.  We got extra lucky that it wasn’t particularly rainy when we went so we were able to see so many animals above and below the water.

Why I Went There: To vacation with a natural twist–really wanted to dive and do other nature-type adventures.

Who Went With Me? boyfriend at the time

[mapimage url=”http%3A%2F%2Fmaps.google.com%2Fmaps%2Fapi%2Fstaticmap%3Fsize%3D200x200%26sensor%3Dfalse%26markers%3D%5Bcostarica%5D%26zoom%3D4″]

We Stayed Here: Pirate Cove Hotel, near Corcovado National Park for nature hikes, boating, diving, scuba, zip lining,  and with  Desafio Adventure Company for white water rafting, waterfall rappelling, kayaking, hot springs, etc.

You Won’t Want to Miss: Can’t miss the volcanoes in the north, nor the jungle in the south. If you dive, the Osa Peninsula is an economic place to go that is spectacular. We had whales come up to our boat before our dive!

Eat Here: Everywhere! Great gallo pinto (local beans and rice) from one end to the other.

Play Here: Osa Peninsula–it’s wild and barely inhabited and is NOT where the tourists go. La Fortuna area for the volcanoes and whitewater/waterfalls.

If I Went Again: More time scuba diving off the Osa Peninsula/Isla del Caño

How Did You Get There From Dallas? Airplane, straight shot from DFW to San Jose.

Other Tips For Fellow Travelers: The whole country is amazingly friendly and totally geared towards nature. Any kind of hiking, diving, nature-type activities will find you in heaven. Try to look for smaller providers that may give more personalized and unique services.
