If you fancy yourself a champion speller, it should please you to see local luminaries put to the test tonight at the “Dallas Celebrity Spelling Bee.”
The spelling bee, happening at Dallas City Performance Hall, benefits Reading Partners, a tutoring program that works in partnership with DISD to help kids who need an extra literacy boost. Our own Christine Allison, president of D Magazine, will judge the efforts of Mayor Mike Rawlings (is he as strong on words as he is on high fives?), chef Kent Rathbun, CBS anchor Susy Solis, and many others. Arrive early for the cocktail hour before everyone gets down to business.
Elsewhere, dancer/artist Danielle Georgiou and her performance art troupe, Danielle Georgiou Dance Group, open a new piece tonight at the Margo Jones Theatre in Fair Park. It’s called “Dirty Filthy Diamonds,” a series of choreographed vignettes enhanced by costumes, specially composed music, and a slight script (the performance is mostly nonverbal) to examine a relationship between thought and instinct. Tickets are ten bucks, and the piece will run through next week. Drop by nearby Craft and Growler for a beer before the show.
