Tonight, the Magnolia Theatre screens both the Oscar-nominated live action and animated shorts—along with Casablanca, though I feel like I used up my mushy movie quota yesterday. Not that there’s a lot of comparison between You’ve Got Mail and Casablanca, so if you’re more of the doomed-love sort rather than happily-ever-after, it might be a better bet. However, this is an opportunity to get invested in yet another Academy Awards category. Our reviews of the live action program and animated programs are here and here.
Also this evening, the Modern Art Museum’s Tuesday lecture features David Bates, the artist who chose Dallas over New York years ago and still managed an incredibly successful career. He has two significant, sizable exhibitions that opened this past Sunday, one at the Nasher Sculpture Center and the other at the Modern. Tonight, you’ll find him in conversation with arts journalist Tyler Green. I also recommend reading Peter Simek’s feature on Bates from D‘s February issue.
