“Iago? What’s that mean?”

As Peter noted earlier this morning on FrontRow, VideoFest starts this evening.

Opening night festivities are happening at Gilley’s before the rest of the fest moves to the Alamo Drafthouse in Richardson. Here’s a list of the top five films you should see this year, which includes tonight’s screening of True Tales. For a twist on the current saturation of JFK-related happenings, it’s a documentary on Nancy Myers, AKA Tammi True, PTA mom and the headlining burlesque act at Jack Ruby’s swanky Carousel Club. Ruby owned a few striptease joints. He’s also the man who shot Lee Harvey Oswald, effectively murdering Myers’ peaceful double life.

The Ruby Revue burlesque troupe will put on a pre-show performance, and Myers herself will participate in a Q&A after the film. Wear your Mad Men-inspired best. For homework, read our story in D Magazine on why Dallas burlesque owes Tammi True a debt.

In Fort Worth, Amphibian Stage Productions and the Modern Art Museum bring us the best of the British with National Theatre Live, a screening of a theatrical production recorded in high definition and broadcast via satellite. Tonight offers the National Theatre’s new production of Othello, a tragedy that revolves around the Moorish military general Othello and his new wife Desdemona. The bitter Iago, one of Shakespeare’s greatest villains and Othello’s trusted advisor, exploits Othello’s love for Desdemona and engineers the great man’s downfall. The screening starts at the Modern Art Museum at 7 p.m.
