Milestone anniversaries are becoming routine for longtime Dallas Morning News business columnist Robert “Bob” Miller. It was just a couple of years ago this month that Miller marked his 60th year with The News. This past weekend, the veteran journalist, who’s 89, and his wife, Shirley, 78, celebrated a landmark wedding anniversary with a dinner for a few dozen friends and family members at City Cafe.
Among the guests: columnist/commentator Lee Cullum; original DMN pro-football writer Sam Blair and his wife, Karen; former acting Dallas mayor Adlene Harrison; ex-state representative Bill Ceverha and his wife, Mary; SMU journalism prof Carolyn Barta and her husband, Joe; and others including Ruth and Dr. Ken Altshuler and Marnie and Kern Wildenthal.
In brief remarks, Miller—paraphrasing here—said that Shirley (who, like him, has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri) doesn’t read his stuff. Early on, he said, his wife would pore over his columns in The News and suggest ways that he might improve them by saying things differently. When he’d finally had enough of this, Shirley said: Fine; in an effort to save the marriage, I won’t read your column anymore. To which Miller replied: Fine; don’t read it. So she doesn’t. And that’s apparently one (small) reason the Millers were feted for 50 years of wedded bliss Saturday night.
