Happy Columbus Day. I plan on watching that not-great film starring Val Kilmer in celebration. Since it’s a heist movie, it’s actually only unrelated if you don’t consider Christopher Columbus’ discovery of America some sort of elaborate land theft. But for now, excuse me while I interrupt our regularly scheduled things to do missive for the tweeny version, just for a second.
Because, well, if you know/live with a Nickelodeon fan, chances are you’ve at least seen bits and pieces of the show Victorious. And have an inkling about the show’s star, Victoria Justice, who happens to be out and about promoting her new movie, Fun Size, in theaters later this month. Justice will be at the State Fair tonight, acting as master of ceremonies for the nightly Reliant Starlight parade around the grounds, and then she’ll do a Q&A with Billy the Kid on the Chevrolet Main Stage. The parade kicks off around 7:15 p.m., she’ll be on stage around 8 p.m. And if you’re planning a trip to the fair anyway, check out Carol’s compilation of healthier food options (with a printable, pretty PDF).
Meanwhile, it’s a good day for families with younger kids to visit the Dallas Arboretum, since they’ve got tons of activities planned around their Autumn at the Arboretum pumpkin extravaganza, and two concerts with children’s entertainer Eddie Coker all lined up. There’s a petting zoo, face painting, and arts and crafts until 2 p.m.
Over in Deep Ellum, New Jersey’s Screaming Females play Club Dada. There’s only one female in the group–lead singer Marissa Paternoster, and back in May, she made Spin Magazine‘s list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time. You could do way, way worse things tonight than checking out this show. The Chloes and War Party support, and as always, I highly recommend drinks a couple doors down at Black Swan Saloon.
