Here’s the latest scoop on Olympic gold medalist Steve Lundquist. It seems that the former SMU swimmer has landed a two-year contract as an official representative and adviser to The Verandah Club, the Loews Anatole Hotel’s new state-of-the-art health club. Hotel manager Randy Gan-tenbein says that Lundquist will appear six or seven times a year at health club events and will help develop the health club’s swimming program. One event that should garner a lot of attention is when Lundquist acts as “head coach” at The Verandah’s corporate sports challenge to benefit Child Care Dallas, set for June 1. The event will pit about 25 corporations against each other in various sports events, and the winner will be announced that night at an outdoor Hawaiian theme party on the club grounds. Gantenbein adds that although Lundquist says he’ll be maintaining a home in Dallas, he’ll be in and out of town doing modeling and acting assignments.

Ever wonder why it’s so hard to get a call through to Rain-bow-Ticketmaster Computer Ticket Service when big-name performers such as Neil Diamond or Barry Manilow come to town? Southwestern Bell reports that the ticket company has the distinction of having the largest volume of incoming calls ever registered for one day by any one business in Texas. On November 12 of last year, when Manilow concert tickets went on sale, the influx of calls knocked out service to about 93,000 customers during a two- to three-hour period while 3,197 calls rang through to the ticket seller. Because such an inconvenience is illegal, Bell has had to switch Rainbow to a new computerized call-switching network, which means it will have two new telephone numbers. Its new Dallas number is 787-2000, and its new metro number is 787-1500. It must be nice to have the most popular telephone number around.

Dallas businessman Russell H. Perry, chief executive officer of Republic Financial Services Inc., was recently elected chairman of the Business-Industry Political Action Committee (BIPAC). Perry is the first Texas businessman to lead the group, which was founded 21 years ago in Washington, D.C.
