The co-founder (with his wife, Helen) of Greenhill School died Sunday. He was just shy of his 100th birthday.  The email from Headmaster Scott Griggs is below the jump.

In Memoriam: Greenhill mourns the loss of co-founder Bernard Fulton

It is with great sadness that I share with you that Greenhill School’s co-founder and visionary leader Bernard Fulton passed away peacefully at his home Sunday at age 99.

Mr. Fulton, along with his cherished wife, Helen, served as the founding headmaster of Greenhill from 1950 to 1976.  During this time, he pioneered the concept of open-space education and the developmental primer program in the Southwest, and proved that his vision of independent co-education represented the wave of the future for the region.

After retirement from Greenhill, Mr. Fulton continued to stay active in the Greenhill community attending football games, commencements, alumni events, and celebrating his 99th birthday on campus with the students last spring.  His presence on campus continued to be an inspiration for all.

From humble beginnings come great things, and Bernard Fulton will be remembered by all as a beloved leader whose commitment and sense of purpose created one of America’s preeminent independent schools.
