Ed Kohler says that Village Voice Media is manipulating Digg to inflate their web traffic numbers for advertisers. Local advertisers, of course, don’t benefit from traffic that isn’t local, but rarely are sophisticated enough to ask where the high numbers are coming from. Of course, the scheme backfires when Dallas advertisers don’t get any response from all those people in LA and Minneapolis. So in the end, it probably damages the brand more than it helps it.
