I Miss Gerry Fraley So Much

|

It makes my heart hurt. Here’s the deal: I’ve been reading sports pages every day since I was about 7. Now I read about 10 sports websites every day, about 20 on Sundays. But every time I read Fraley, the former DMN reporter and columnist, I learn something. Last year, Fraley took the DMN‘s buyout offer. Now he lives in St. Louis, where his wife is a newsroom exec at the Post-Dispatch. He writes a weekly column for the sports section. This week, I learn that the Cardinals are on pace to be only the ninth team since WWII to ground into 150 or more double plays. Also, he keeps pointing out that the evaluation methods espoused in Moneyball, the book that made people feel like they were smarter than everyone in baseball except Billy Beane, continue to prove no better at finding big-league talent than traditional methods.
