Have you heard the one about the guy who went looking for a Sazerac all over town and got are-you-crazy looks from bartenders who had never even heard of this classic Hew Orleans drink? One waitress in a noisy bar even thonght he was commenting on her figure. What’s a sazerac? A potent combination of pernod, bitters, and rye (not bourbon) whiskey- Old Overholt is a good one, Limit two. please. Anyway, we got a “huh” or a flat “no” as a response in more than two-thirds of the bars we visited. At the Chaise Lounge, the legendary Rocky, waiter extraordinaire, helped the bartender build a sazerac for us thirsty guinea pigs, and the result was a great first effort. Gershwin’s Bar & Grill also turns out a good one (though here again the waiter had to consult a bar guide). Sadly, neither drink matched the glorious production at the lite, lamented Magnolia Cafe.
