LATE AFTERNOON RANT

|

In my ridiculously huge pile of (mostly junk) mail I discovered the new Zagat Survey for Texas restaurants. Now, maybe I am just being overly sensitive (and so what if I am?), but I think Dallas deserves its own freakin’ Zagat Survey. (Yes, I know, we’ve discussed Zagat’s idiocy over this very matter before.) And I have to believe that folks–chefs and restaurateurs, in particular–feel the same way in Houston and Austin, and probably San Antonio, which is also covered within these pages. I’m sorry, but Dallas, Houston, and Austin have vibrant and interesting enough dining scenes–all by themselves. We shouldn’t have to share. And did I mention how looking at each entry, with quote after quote after quote (do you really need quotes around “revolving restaurant” or “Italian bistro” for crying out loud?) makes me want to take my letter opener and stick it in my eye. Yes, I know these are based on actual surveys from which they lift the aforementioned phrases, but do you really need quotes around a fact? No one willl dispute that the restaurant revolves. Sigh.

I feel much better now.
